Map of South Africa

South Africa

Drakensberg, South AfricaSouth Africa has a long and somewhat troubled history. The first contact the indigenous tribes had with the outside world was in the 15th century when Portuguese explorers landed. The Dutch followed in 17th century and then the British in the 19th century. South Africa gained independence in 1910 and apartheid was abolished in 1994 giving birth to modern day South Africa. By any standards, South Africa is a stunningly beautiful county. The interior is basically a vast flat plateau surrounded by steep slopes tumbling down to the coast. These slopes, known as the Great Escarpment, form some of South Africa’s most dramatic scenery. The choice of holidays in South Africa is many and varied. Popular destinations include safari parks like the Kruger National Park in the northeast. In the southwest there are the craggy cliffs of the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Town with it’s the iconic flat-topped Table Mountain, both boasting a host of world renowned surfing beaches. Nearby Stellenbosch is an important wine producing region. While along the south coast, the Garden Route is home to some of the most awe inspiring scenery to be found in South Africa.

Table Mountain, Western Cape, South AfricaHolidays in the Western Cape contain some of the most popular tourist destinations in South Africa. Cape Town is a perennial favourite sitting beneath Table Mountain with its eminent flat top. Northern Cape

Windmills in Namaqualand, Northern Cape, South AfricaThe Northern Cape is South Africa's largest province but also its most sparsely populated. Most of the province is a vast arid wilderness with the Kalahari Desert in the north, famed for its giant red sand dunes. On the west coast the Namaqua National Park is renowned for its magnificent display of wild flowers that carpets this semi-desert with a kaleidoscope of colour in the spring. The interior includes the grassy plains of the Karoo peppered with salt pans and the diamond bearing rock called kimberlite. It is from this that led to the 1870 diamond rush around Kimberley and the appropriately named Hopetown. Orange River flows from the mountains in Lesotho north through the interior to its mouth at Alexander Bay on the Atlantic Coast. The river is not only popular for canoeing and rafting, but also at Upington serves to irrigate vineyards, giving rise to an important wine industry. The area is also a burgeoning tourist destination known as Green Kalahari based around the vineyards, Orange River, the Kalahari Desert and San Bushmen. It offers safaris, tours and hiking trails for intrepid travellers. Holidays in the Northern Cape aren’t for everyone but the region does have its own rugged charm and will appeal to the more adventurous.

KwaZulu-Natal

Hlalanathi, Northern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South AfricaThe province of KwaZulu-Natal was formed from the historic regions of Natal and Zululand. Natal was named by the Portuguese and occupied by the Boers. Zululand was home to the Zulu Kingdom. By 1902, after wars with both Zulus and Boers, it was colonized by the British. The names of battles like Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, Ulundi and Ladysmith are now immortalized in British and South African history. However, despite its turbulent past, holidays to KwaZulu-Natal have lots to offer. The province has a fabulous array of scenery. Its sub-tropical coast extends north to the border with Mozambique and is known for its excellent beaches. Popular beach resorts include Durban, Margate, Port Shepstone, Scottburgh and Port Edward in the south; and Ballito, Umhlanga and Salt Rock in the north. Inland fields of sugarcane, rolling hills and flat savannah sit against a backdrop of craggy prehistoric mountains. In the Drakensberg Mountains, the impressive Tugela Falls is the second highest waterfall in the world. There’s the excitement of big game safaris in the Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park and the sombre historic battlefields to visit across the region. From safaris to surfing, holidays in KwaZulu-Natal offers an eclectic mix of activities throughout your African adventure.

Transvaal

Lion in the Kruger National Park, Transvaal, South AfricaThe historic region of Transvaal includes the provinces of Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga situated in the northeast of the country. Gauteng is home to Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa and Johannesburg, its largest city. Gauteng means “place of gold “and is duly named after the discovery of gold in 1886 that resulted in Johannesburg become the mega metropolis it is today. Limpopo and Mpumalanga are where most of the game reserves are found. While there are numerous safari parks in the area, the vast majority of holidays to the Transvaal are to visit the Kruger National Park. It’s about the size of Wales and the largest safari park by far. The Kruger is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the place to see the big five game animals of lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo. However, be patient as some animals are more elusive than others. The Kruger is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, created through an agreement with game reserves in Zimbabwe and Mozambique to form a gigantic conservation area.

Clarens in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, Free State, South AfricaFree State is a province in South Africa’s interior. For a period during the second half of the 19th century it was called the Orange Free State while it was an independent Boer homeland. It’s a region of mainly flat grassy plans and pastureland. However, in the south and east the terrain changes to rolling hills and impressive rocky outcrops in the foothills of the Drakensberg and Maluti Mountains. The scenic foothills are home to a number of popular holiday resorts and attractions. There’s the Golden Gate Highlands Park with a hotel and activities like hiking, canoeing, abseiling ad horse riding. Also popular is the picturesque town of Clarens, a haven for artists and a mecca for trout fishing. In addition to these, a series of game and nature reserves run through the region, often with self catering lodges and chalets. Another fascinating site is the Vredefort Dome, a massif crater formed by a meteorite strike millions of years ago and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Finally, Bloemfontein is the provincial capital and birthplace J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
