Malta

Valletta, Malta's capital cityHolidays on Malta have long been popular, particularly for weddings and honeymoons. Lapped by the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea and bathed with 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, Malta is a year-round holiday destination with a choice between three islands. Malta Island is the largest with the capital Valletta, followed by Gozo, with its rolling hills and typical stone built farmhouses. Finally, tiny Comino offers total seclusion with one hotel and just a handful of local residents. This charming archipelago is the perfect island retreat for those looking for peace and quiet, while its crystal clear waters attract divers from around the world. Sun, sea and sand is a winning combination for many with beach resorts like Mellieha Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay. However, due to its strategic position and excellent harbour, Malta also has a fascinating history dating back to the Phoenicians, through the Romans, the Knights Hospitaller, and the British. Malta finally gained its independence in 1964. They all left their mark on the islands, which can clearly be seen in the classic architecture and fascinating museums.

Malta Island

Marsaxlokk, MaltaMalta Island is the largest in the Maltese archipelago and offers the greatest choice of holidays on Malta. Due to its historic and cultural links with the UK, Malta has long been a favourite holiday destination with the British. However, a combination of exceptional climate; numerous archaeological and architectural attractions, including nine UNESCO World Heritage sites; a warm and friendly people; and its unspoilt coast and countryside, Malta is now attracting an increasing number of holidaymakers from around the world. The capital Valletta is overwhelmingly the most popular destination for holidays on Malta. There’s no shortage of accommodation from hotels in Valletta with atmospheric views overlooking the Grand Harbour, to apartments and old townhouses in the narrow streets of this characterful city. Just outside Valletta, there’s the shopping area of Sliema; St Julian’s Bay which is great for nightlife; and the coastal resort of Marsaskala. Other popular resorts for holidays on Malta Island include the fishing village of Marsaxlokk in the south, Saint Paul's Bay and Mellieha Bay in the north, and Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay in the west.

Gozo and Comino

The Blue Lagoon and Cominotto island, MaltaGozo with its little sister island of Comino are the more relaxed islands of the Maltese archipelago. The fact that the islands can only be reached by ferry or helicopter increases their isolation and adds to their reputation as a tranquil destination and a genuine holiday haven. Holiday rentals on Gozo are peppered across the unspoilt picturesque countryside. Many are traditional Maltese stone farmhouses that have been lovingly restored and converted for self catering holidays. There’s also a selection of holiday apartments and hotels on Gozo, mainly centred in the popular coastal resorts of Marsalforn in the north, Xlendi Bay in the south and Ghajnsielem in the east of the island. Victoria, also known as Rabat, is the island’s capital. Its Citadella offers excellent views of Gozo and several interesting museums. Comino is well worth at least a day trip for its famous Blue Lagoon and crystal clear waters, perfect for diving and snorkelling. In fact, both Gozo and Comino are considered to be amongst the best diving destinations in the Mediterranean. For longer stays, there is one hotel on Comino but currently no holiday rentals.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
