Central Hungary

The Hungarian Parliament, BudapestHungary’s capital Budapest and the surrounding county of Pest make up Central Hungary. The main attraction is clearly the city of Budapest itself. Budapest has plenty of hotels and self catering apartments from which to explore this vibrant city, stacked with museums, monuments, exquisite architecture and mouth-watering restaurants. Another popular destination for holidays in Central Hungary is in the hills overlooking the famous Danube Bend in northern Pest around the historic town of Visegrád. Hungarian Plains

Hortobágy National Park, Hungary. The Great Plains, also known as the Puszta or Nagyalföld, occupies southern and eastern Hungary. The region is part of Central Europe’s Pannonian Basin, a vast plain left after the Pannonian Sea dried up eons ago. This rich agricultural land of horsemen and shepherds has long been the subject of Hungarian folklore. In 1973 a vast part of the Puszta was set aside to form Hortobágy National Park. It’s the largest protected area in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. The park extends into Northern Hungary and includes Lake Tisza that straddles the border between the Great Plains and the north. Lake Tisza is the second largest lake in Hungary and a popular holiday resort for water sports enthusiasts with sailing, water skiing and windsurfing. It’s technically a manmade reservoir built to control flooding of Tisza River, which coincidentally has turned into a haven for tourists and wildlife alike. Holidays to the Puszta wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Kiskunság National Park situated in the west of the region. It’s a UNESCO biosphere wetland reserve rich in flora and fauna, including vast flocks of migratory birds. There are numerous tourist trails and swimming and camping in and around its many lakes.

Transdanubia

Lake Balaton, HungaryTransdanubia, also known as Pannonia from its days as a Roman province, has a rich history. It has three UNESCO World Heritage sites at Pannonhalma, Pécs, and Lake Fertõ. The countryside is beautiful boasting a mix of gentle rolling hills, forests, and flat grassy plains with a scattering of mountains, mainly in the northwest. There’s Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake, along with the smaller lakes of Velence and Fertő (Neusiedl in German) on the border with Austria. Most of the holidays in Transdanubia are to Lake Balaton, Hungary’s most popular tourist destination outside Budapest. The southern shore of Lake Balaton, with its bustling resorts and shallow warm waters, is ideal for family holidays. The main resorts in the south include Siófok, Balatonföldvár and Zamárdi. Balaton’s north shore is more relaxed with quaint resorts like Balatonfüred, Keszthely and the Tihany peninsula. At Hévíz there’s one of the world’s largest thermal lakes and medicinal spa. There’s also a similar spa at Zalakaros, which coincidentally was discovered while drilling for oil! Also notable are the Villány-Siklós vineyards and the historic town of Koszeg that dates back to the 13th century.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
