Cyprus

Lighthouse on Archaeological Park in Kato Paphos, CyprusHolidays in Cyprus continue to be popular despite its troubled past. Since the 1974 Turkish invasion, Cyprus has been divided into the Turkish controlled north and Greek Cypriot south separated by a UN buffer zone. Despite this, UK holidaymakers are drawn to the Mediterranean’s third largest island because of its British cultural, military ties and excellent climate with around 3,200 hours of sunshine per year. Dating back to ancient times, Cyprus’s turbulent history has left its landscapes strewn with cultural treasures from the Neolithic to the Byzantine that will keep history buffs enthralled throughout their holidays in Cyprus. Beach lovers are also well catered for with plenty of sandy beaches and rocky coves lapped by the warm azure waters of the Mediterranean. For sporty types, Cyprus offers everything from hiking to scuba diving and in the mountains there’s even skiing in the winter. The younger tourists tend to head east to the fleshpots of Ayia Napa with its pubs and clubs, while families and older visitors head west to plush villas and hotels in Paphos for some peace and quiet.

Famagusta

Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, Famagusta, CyprusThe Famagusta District is split between Northern and Southern Cyprus. In the Greek Cypriot south the small enclave of Cape Greco is the second most popular destination for holidays in Cyprus after Paphos. It is said to have some of the best beaches on the island along with a great offering of water sports. The hedonistic resort of Ayia Napa is the clubbing capital of Cyprus, whereas the beach resort of Protaras, while no shrinking violet, is more family orientated. The Turkish controlled north is less well known, but offers a sanctuary from its lively neighbour. The sparsely populated Karpas Peninsula rivals the south for breaches but without the hordes of tourists. One of around 46 sandy beaches on the peninsula, Karpas Golden Beach near Rizokarpaso, is claimed to be the best beach on Cyprus. For historical sites, northern Famagusta surpasses the south with the Kantara Castle, Apostolos Andreas Monastery, the Ayias Trias Basilica, and ruins of ancient cities like Karpasia, Aphendrika, and Salamis to name just a few.

Kyrenia

Kyrenia, CyprusThe Kyrenia District is also known as Girne and is in Turkish controlled Northern Cyprus. The city of Kyrenia, with its beautiful harbour and impressive Byzantine castle, nestles at the foot of the rugged Kyrenia Mountains. It is the capital of the district, the top holiday destination in Northern Cyprus and one of the most visited places on the island. This port city has a fascinating history, a vibrant nightlife and a popular arts and culture festival held annual in June. In the mountains behind Kyrenia there’s the little village of Bellapais, once home to the writer Lawrence Durrell, and nearby the Saint Hilarion Castle, that some say inspired the one at Disneyland, although that does sound a bit fanciful.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
