Auvergne

View of the whole of Puy en Velay, Saint Michel Aiguilhe and Notre Dame de France statue - AuvergneMuch of Auvergne is covered by the dramatic mountains of the Massif Central. The long-extinct volcanic landscape in the Puy-de-Dôme region around Clermont-Ferrand is particularly impressive with giant plugs of hardened magma, some topped with churches and chapels, dotted across the rich countryside shrouded with thick oak forests, hidden caves and deep gorges. Auvergne is largely an agricultural region but tourism is growing in importance and there’s a range of self catering cottages, farmhouses, gîtes, villas and hotels in the Allier, Puy-de-Dôme, Cantal and Haute Loire departments. But Auvergne has more than just its stunning scenery. There’s the ancient region of Bourbonnais in Allier, the land of the House of Bourbon and seat of the Kings of France since Henry IV. Auvergne has a host or Romanesque churches and medieval châteaux. And for the kids there’s Vulcania , a theme park all about volcanoes.

Burgundy

Horse riding along the canal beside fields of rape - Cote D'Or, Burgundy, FranceDespite being world famous for its vineyards and wines, Burgundy remains relatively unknown as a destination for hotel and self catering holidays. Although this adds to its charm as a quiet, unspoilt region in which to relax and enjoy some of Central France’s more gentle scenery, it is surprising as Burgundy has loads to offer. There’s an excellent range of holiday cottages, farmhouses, gîtes and villas and hotels in the Côte-d'Or, Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire and Yonne, scattered amidst the gently rolling farmland of cereal crops and vineyards. Burgundy has more than its fare share of medieval abbeys, churches, hilltop castles and fortified villages. There’s the regional capital Dijon, known for its mustard, magnificent Renaissance architecture and first-rate museums, the city of Beaune, centre of the wine industry and home to France’s finest medieval hospital, and the pretty village of Chablis, famous for its wine.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
