Map of Canada

Canada

Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Alberta, CanadaCanada epitomises adventure holidays in the great outdoors. The second largest country in the world, Canada is one of few where you can escape to a genuine wilderness untouched by mankind. A land of stunning scenery, dramatic mountains, forested valleys and icy lakes, Canada also has its share of vibrant cities rich with culture and history. Canada’s capital city is Ottawa, although its largest is Toronto, but there are also the great cities of Montréal, Québec and Vancouver to explore. Apart from the awe inspiring scenery, holidays in Canada are famed for an impressive array of wildlife, a meld of different cultures and a host of activities from skiing, snowboarding and hiking to kayaking, white-water rafting and whale watching. Unsurprisingly in such a vast country, the choice of holiday destinations in Canada is immense. There are the historic Atlantic Provinces in the east, like Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, along with Montreal and French speaking Quebec on the Great Lakes and the Hudson Bay. Central Canada includes the rolling Prairies and the dramatic Rocky Mountains. While in the west, British Columbia and Alberta are home to some of the world’s top ski resorts like Whistler Blackcomb and Lake Louise in Banff National Park. Canada’s north is not for the faint hearted with its Arctic wastelands and places like Dawson City in the Yukon, that came to fame during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890’s.

Atlantic Provinces

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, Nova Scotia, CanadaThe Atlantic Provinces, also known as Atlantic Canada, consists of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Although the region was originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, it was gradually taken over by Europeans from the 16th century onwards. However, way before that Newfoundland was briefly settled by the Vikings in. What started as European trading posts for fishing and trapping gradually became permanent settlements. Eventually the Atlantic Provinces were integrated with Canada, the last to join being Newfoundland in 1949. Newfoundland is an island renowned for its rugged natural beauty and friendly people. Labrador, northeast of Quebec, is sparsely populated with high mountain peaks and breathtaking scenery. New Brunswick sits to the east of the US state of Maine at the north end of the Appalachians. Its forested mountains have been rounded by glaciation. Nova Scotia is a peninsular attached to New Brunswick. It is the largest exporter of Christmas trees and lobsters in the world. New Brunswick is also known for its rich culture and magnificent coastline. Prince Edward Island is Canada’s smallest province and boasts beautiful sandy beaches and lush farmland that produces 25 percent of Canada’s potatoes.

Quebec

Percé on the Gaspé Peninsula in Québec, CanadaBack in 1750 Quebec was part of New France. It has kept this strong French heritage to the present day, being the only province in Canada that officially only speaks French. Most of the holidays to Quebec are in the south along the St Lawrence River, home to Quebec City, the provincial capital and Montreal, Quebec’s largest city. The old town of Quebec is a World Heritage site and still has its original walls built by the French and British armies and is popular with tourists. Montreal is considered to be the cultural and economic heart of the province with numerous sporting events and festivals. The scenic Gaspé Peninsular in the east is a popular holiday destination, as is the famous ski resort of Mont-Tremblant in the west. In contrast to the south, northern Quebec is a vast area of sparsely populated sub-arctic forests where logging and mining industries flourish. It’s also home to many of Canada’s indigenous communities.

Ontario

Niagara Falls on the Canada/USA boarderApart from a small densely populated area in the south around Ottawa and Toronto, most of Ontario is a sparsely populated wilderness of forests, mountains, lakes and bogs called the Canadian Shield. The Shield is rich in minerals and teeming with wildlife. Fortunately in such a vast region there is room for both industrial mining and magnificent nature parks. Most of the holidays in Ottawa however, are taken in the south, with the Niagara Falls being one of the top destinations. Also popular is Canada’s capital, Ottawa with a stack of cultural accoutrements, along with Toronto, which is the largest city in Canada and described as eclectic, vibrant and multicultural. North of Toronto is the popular holiday region of Muskoka and Georgian Bay. Here, lakeside cottages are in high demand along its hauntingly beautiful shorelines broken by rocky coves and pebble strewn inlets, backed by rolling woodlands and lush forests.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
