Bulgaria

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia, BulgariaFor a small country, Bulgaria packs a big punch as a year round holiday destination. In the summer there’s the archetypal sun, sea and sand holidays on the Black Sea Coast or Bulgarian Riviera as it’s also known. Inland, stunning mountains, forests and wild nature parks beckon the more adventurous. In the winter they turn into a playground for skiing enthusiasts, and regardless of the season, there’s a host of cultural sites and ancient cobbled towns to explore. Most holidays in Bulgaria are to the Black Sea Coast and the Ski Resorts in the mountains around Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia. Much of Northern Bulgaria is taken over by the fertile plains of the River Danube as it makes its way from the Black Forest in Germany to the Black Sea in Bulgaria. The region is full of history with ancient forts and medieval castles from past empires. Southern Bulgaria also has its fare share of historical sites like the 4th century B.C. Thracian Tomb of Kazanluk, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bulgarian Black Sea Coast

Sunny Beach, Black Sea Coast, BulgariaThe Black Sea Coast or Bulgarian Riviera as it’s also known enjoys blazing sunny summers. With a subtropical climate, average summer temperatures are around 28oC and the sea temperature a tepid 26oC. In July and August you can expect to enjoy 300 hours of sunshine, which all told rivals many Mediterranean resorts. The Bulgarian Black Sea Coast stretches for 378 km with 130 km of that being golden sandy beaches. After a slow start, the Bulgarian Riviera is now attracting millions of holidaymakers to resorts like Sunny Beach, Golden Sands and Albena, which with keener pricing are giving the “Costas” of Western Europe a run for their money. For more vibrant party resorts, try holidays in Sunny Beach near Burgas in the south or Golden Sands near Varna in the north. These are the two largest resorts on the Black Sea Coast. For something more family friendly consider the beach resorts of Albena near Varna, Ahtopol near the border with Turkey in the south or Sozopol near Burgas.

Southern Bulgaria

Rhodopes Mountains, BulgariaSouthern Bulgaria stretches from the Rhodope Mountains in the south, across the Upper Thracian Plain to the Balkan Mountains in the north. The Rhodopes have awesome scenery of impressive peaks and deep river cut gorges. The popular Pamporovo ski resort is in the heart of the Rhodopes at the foot of Snejanka peak (1926 m). It claims to be the sunniest ski resort in Bulgaria and is ideal for beginners, but with some more advanced runs too. Other less well known resorts for skiing and snowboarding include Somlyay and Momchilovtsi. During the summer the ski resorts offer a host of outdoor activities from mountain climbing to hiking. The Upper Thracian Plain is in the southeast of Bulgaria between the mountains and the Black Sea. This hot undulating plain, crisscrossed by numerous rivers and tributaries, is part of the historical region of Thrace. It is home to the 4th century B.C. Thracian Tomb at Kazanluk. It’s where ancient Thracian rulers where buried and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Balkan Mountains in the north are deeply rooted in Bulgarian culture and history. They also offer hiking, biking and horse riding surrounded by more glorious scenery with dense forests, majestic waterfalls, mineral springs and snow capped peaks.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
