Brussels Region

Royal Palace of BrusselsThe Brussels Region, also known as the Brussels-Capital Region is made up of 19 municipalities including Belgium’s capital, the City of Brussels. Brussels has evolved from its roots as a 10th century fortress town into a thriving cosmopolitan city, with an eclectic mix of cultures, architecture and cuisine. At the heart of its medieval centre is a magnificent square called the Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular with tourists and locals alike. There are 85 museums, trendy street-side bars and cafés, great gastronomy, impressive palaces and a host of exhibitions and festivals to enjoy. Perhaps a surprise to some, but taking holidays in Brussels, even for just a weekend city break, is well worth it as Brussels really is an impressive city. In the surrounding municipalities there’s melting pot ethnic neighbourhoods. Here you can find typical restaurants, flea markets, leafy suburbs and quaint medieval squares. As you’d expect apartments and hotels in Brussels are more affordable here than in the city centre.

Flemish Region

Eiermarkt, Bruges, Flanders, BelgiumFlanders, once part of the Netherlands, was reluctantly ceded to Belgium after the 1830 revolution, and a strong rivalry between the Dutch speaking north and French speaking Wallonia in the south, still exists to the present day. Brussels is an enclave within the Flemish Region, so holidays in Flanders provides the perfect base for day trips to the capital. Of course, Flanders has plenty of attractions of its own. The great medieval cities of Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are eternally popular with their romantic canals, impressive architecture, magnificent castles and quaint market squares. Although highly emotive, the WWI Flanders battlefield tours around Ypres are also popular. The war graves, cemeteries and memorials commemorate the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
