Majorca (Mallorca)

Palma beach, MajorcaThe largest of the Balearics, Majorca receives about 10 million holidaymakers a year, so it’s just as well it’s the largest island. Like Ibiza, Majorca has a split personality. The dramatic mountainous northwest coast is a World Heritage Site offering breathtaking landscapes, lunar like rock formations, and cliffs that plunge vertically into the sea below. Here, holidays in Port de Sóller are popular. However, it’s in resorts like Port de Pollença, Alcúdia Bay and Porto Cristo around the beautiful sandy beaches of Majorca’s north and east coast were most of the self catering holidays and hotels are found. In the south there are Palma de Mallorca villas for the more refined and apartments for rent in Magaluf, Palma Nova and Arenal for the fun loving.

Ibiza (Eivissa)

Old Town of Ibiza (Eivissa)Ibiza is a “tale of two cities” that reflects very different sides of the island. Ibiza town or Vila d'Eivissa in Spanish, is on the south of the island and its historic old quarter of quaint cobbled alleyways winding their way up to the fortified upper town of Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its ancient battlements, castle and cathedral, is in stark contrast to the brash vibrant holiday resort of San Antonio Abad in the northwest. Equally, the sandy beaches hidden in tranquil rocky coves around Santa Eulària, Portinatx or Es Canar are juxtaposed with Ibiza’s notorious live music and summer clubbing scene. Luckily, holidays in Ibiza cater across the spectrum from family villas in Ibiza town to budget apartments in San Antonio, along with a variety of hotels across the island.

Southern Menorca is flat and home to some lovely sandy beaches and the capital Maó (Mahón). Northern Menorca has rolling hills and a rugged coastline punctuated with secluded coves surrounded by pine groves. Formentera

Platja de s'Alga, FormenteraFormentera is about 6 km (4 mi) south of Ibiza and can only be reached by ferry, either from Ibiza town or Denia on the Spanish mainland. Due to its remote location, Formentera is perhaps the most unspoilt of all the Balearic Islands. However, the downside is that holiday accommodation on Formentera is limited, although there are several hotels and guest houses. The ferry from Ibiza only takes around 30 minutes and for beach lovers the island is worth visiting, even if it’s just a day trip. Formentera is renowned for its pristine white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters and it’s the perfect place for relaxing on the beach, some of which have nudist areas, or enjoying the host of water sports on offer from scuba diving to windsurfing.

Holiday Destinations

To help you find your ideal destination, the site is divided into countries, regions and often sub-regions, like the Spanish Costa del Sol, for example.

There are three basic ways to get to your destination of choice:

  1. Use the search box on the Home page
  2. Select a country on the Home page
  3. Use the Country Travel Guides
Travel Guides

Travel Guides provide an overview of the regions and destinations available. Clicking an area on the map once takes you to a summary of the region. Double click to zoom to more details and sub-regions. Clicking the ‘Go Deeper’ link at the end of each regional summary will achieve the same result. If there isn’t a ‘Go Deeper’ link, then there are no further sub-regions for that region.

If there’s a three dot ellipsis on the navigation bar under the main menu, this indicates that one or more regions have sub-regions. Double click the region on the map or click the 'Go Deeper' link to explore it further.

Categories

The Travel Guides allow you to search regions by broad categories, like Hotels, Rentals and Resorts, etc. Clicking a category will take you to the results page, where you can refine you search further using the Filter dropdown.

Tip: If you’re not sure where to holiday, stay at the country level to get a feel for a region. Once you’ve found a region of interest, return to the Travel Guide and double click the map or click ‘Go Deeper’ to explore it further.

You can use the navigation bar under the menu to see where you are and return to the Travel Guide from regions or sub-regions.
